Time to Learn

Today we started to learn how to tell the time.  We looked at a couple of really cool website to help us and you can see these tabs on the side of the blog (Bang on Time is a lot of fun!)
We have also been looking at each others digital workbooks and leaving comments on what we like about them.  You can have a look for yourself by clicking one of the names on the right of the blog.
This afternoon we spent some time outside examining trees and leaves in detail.  We did some bark rubbings and ended up with some really interesting pictures.

Losing things!

Today in writing we thought about a time when we lost something.  We decided to write a recount so we could say what happened and also practice using speech marks.  Our writing ended up being really good and we had some really creative ideas.
Here is a random one that was pulled from the pile...

One day, Sam my brother hid my toothbrush.  Wait, no no no hang on I'll start from the beginning.  It was when I was downstairs asking my mum for a story.  I came up and said, "We can have a story!"
I reached up to get my toothbrush and it was not there.  I said, "Sam have you seen my toothbrush?"
He replied, "No, I have not seen your toothbrush."
It took me 4 days to find it.
First day, behind the toilet.  Second day, in the rubbish.  Third day, downstairs.  Fourth day, cupboards and there it was!

We have also been busy testing each other on our 5x tables.  Many of us even managed to get a recording of ourselves published onto our digital workbooks!

Writing Conversations

Yesterday in our writing books we used 'Knock Knock' jokes to create a conversation between two people and to practice all the rules of using speech marks.

Remember
1) Only the words spoken go inside the speech marks.
2) Start a new line every time the speaker changes
3) Start the speech with a capital letter.
4) Use a comma before the speech marks, after the word said.

For example,
Mr Miller said, "Today we are making comics!"

Today
Follow the link below to create your very own comic.  Use one of the knock knock jokes from yesterday.

When you have finished, publish the comics to your digital workbook.

Tomorrow we will turn these comics into written conversations to go next to your comics on your digital workbooks.  You can even do this from home if you want!

Splitting the class up!

Today, nine student from room 11 went to the Cameron Pools to compete in Parnell's Swimming Sports.  Well done to Una, Reika, Maha, Kennedy, Izzy, Oscar, John, Hugo and Ethan.  It sounds as though you all had an awesome time and had lots of success.

The rest of Room 11 spent some time today thinking about some of the things that we treasure.  It could be a person, a pet or an object or even something like 'Music'.

Here is an example from Nayna:
Friendship matters to me because when I'm sad my friends cheer me up and then I'm happy.  When they cheer me up I get a great smile.

We then highlighted the keywords from our writing and turned it into a piece of visual art and also digital art using www.wordle.net

Weird and Wonderful Plants

Today we thought about plants and we wrote down all the things that we already knew.  We shared our ideas with everybody and made a mindmap.  You can see the mindmap below, just move the page about or zoom out to see more of it.  We will add to this over time.

We also wrote some questions about things we would like to know about them.

For maths we have been lerarning about place value and we used a website to help us.  Here is the link so we can play at home.

Census Day

Today is census day in New Zealand.  This is when everyone in NZ has to answer all sorts of questions about who we are and where we live.  Room 11 decided to create their own census to ask the other children in the room.

We found out that it was really important to ask clear questions.  For example, one of us asked, 'How many pets do you have?' and another person said, 'Does that include pets you used to have?'  And so we had to ask 'How many living pets do you have in your house at the moment?'

We also had to make sure we asked questions with only a few answers or it got too tricky.  For example, we couldn't say, 'What is your favourite colour?' Instead we had to say, 'Do you prefer red, blue or green?'

Today Parnell - Tomorrow The World (wide web)

Today Room 11 started to create their own digital workbooks.  A digital workbook is a space online where we can show some off the work we have been creating.  It is also a chance to learn how to create our own websites and how to be safe, sensible and make good choices while using the internet.
We have only just begun and haven't published them yet, but we can work on them from home if we choose to.  We will need to remember our usernames and passwords (the safest place to keep it is our head - but we'll copy them into our homework books next week just in case our memory leaks!)

Soon we will have a link from this blog to each student's password protected site.  Parents will also have the option of following their own child's page and get an email when something is added - more information will follow on how to do that.
Perhaps most exciting of all, is that Room 11 are the first class in the school to be using digital workbooks and we hope to get good enough that we can train some of the other classes on how they can make their own.
So watch this space!
