Auckland Botanic Gardens

This week we went on a school trip to Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manukau.  It was a really exciting day and we learned lots of interesting things, escecially about how different plants adapt to their environment.  This means that some plants, like cacti, have changed over a long time to survive in the place where you find them.  We found out that lots of plants in NZ have small leaves and spiky branches because browser birds, like moas would come along and eat all of the bigger juicer leaves.  So over time, the plants with the smaller leaves and the spikier branches got eaten less.  Interesting stuff!

We also got to plant our very own cactus seed into our plant pots which we have taken home.  Fingers crossed that they grow!
