Passing on the torch!

Today we wrote down our favourite words from yesterday into a poem.  We joined some words together to make interesting sentences.
Difficult battle - fight nearly over. Intelligent trick - clever move in gym -Xanthe

Swifter hotshot - trains every minute. Fearless Olympian - A weightlifter- Morgan and Max

Heroic athlete - Scary gymnastics: Connor

This morning, we passed on the flag and torch to Room 12 and Miss Barr.  It was fun to look after it for extra time!

A monumental awe-inspiring and valiant effort!

Today we looked up some words from a thesaurus.  We are going to make up a poem about the olympics and we wanted to use some really clever words.  We found out some interesting vocabulary like, agony (hurt), monumental (big), revolutionize (change), over wrought (excited), awe inspiring (exciting) and bedlam (noisy).

We joined up with Room 14 after morning tea and had a game of soccer.  Some coaches came and gave us some lessons.

Lily and Johnathan were lucky enough to board a London bus that had stopped by to show us some facts about London and the Olympics.
We didn't have time to give the flags and torch to Miss Barr's class so we will do it tomorrow.

We welcomed Rici back after her trip to the UK, we thought we were going to have a full class BUT Sophia has taken a holiday to South Korea.

A 'flipping' good time!

Today we have been really busy!
In ICT we were researching about ancient Greek Olympics in Athens.  We looked at a website that showed us some of the sports that they played.  They did long jump, wrestling, violent fighting and chariot racing.  We found out that they ran NAKED!
If you want to see a funny clip, you should click here

In gymnastics  we learned to do a flip.  It was scary because I thought I was going to break my back - said Sophia.  But most of us liked it.

We were also handed the school 'Olympic Torch' as well as the NZ and UK flag.  On Monday we will give them to Room 12.

We have also finished a maths test (almost everyone beat last week's score) a spelling test plus reading with Mr Edgerley!  As this that wasn't enough, this afternoon we painted the Tongan flag and made some scrolls!  Thank goodness it's Friday!

Ancient Greek is back on the timetable

Today was the 2nd to last day for gymnastics.  We are mostly feeling a little upset about that!  We have enjoyed learning how to use the springboard, doing the scoops on the balance beam and performing headstands.

Today we have also been learning some ancient Greek!  The alphabet was quite easy.  We found out that the word 'Alphabet' comes from the words 'alpha' and 'beta' which come from the Greek for 'A' and 'B'.  Some of us even know how to write numbers in ancient Greek! We enjoyed writing our names in ancient Greek.
In maths we have been thinking about probability.  We used words like, 'Certain', 'Impossible' and 'Equal chance' and matched them to some sentences.  At first we thought that some things were certain, like 'I will go swimming this weekend' but then we realised that things could only be 'Certain' if there was no way that it wouldn't happen.  We managed to think of lots of reasons why swimming might not happen this weekend, everything from 'toxic water closes the pool' to 'broken legs'!

Reach for the sky! We're beaming!

Today we had some more gymnastics.  We started using the beam.  We talked at the end of the day about some of the words we could use to describe how we felt about gymnastics.  Here are some of those words...

Fun    fantastic,    awesome,   great,   crazy,    exciting,   exhilarating,   epic,     brilliant,     cool,   excellent.

I think it's safe to say that we're enjoying it!

We have also been continuing with our work on writing instructions.  Today we decided to write a recipe.  But rather than writing a normal recipe for soup or an omelette, we made 'Monster Recipies' like eyeball stew or Brain Pie.  Not very tasty but lots of fun!  We found out that instructions usually start with verbs like 'Put' or 'Mix' so we had some great sentences like...

Put 6 fish guts in a smelly bin and shake it! - Johnathan
Get your melted hearts, add a magic potion and mix them together.  - Cameron
Stir the mix and throw some rats tails in! - Oliver

YUCK!

Week 1!

Well, what a week!  Isn't it always the way, you wait and wait for a new student and then all of a sudden 3 come along at once!  After saying goodbye to so many children this year it was lovely to welcome Jimin, Nicole and Iiris into Room 11.

It has been a busy week.  We started gymnastics.  Take a look at some of our pictures and see how awesome we are on the springboard and the vault.  Next week Stuart says we will be using a balance beam too!

In maths, we are learning about division.  It turns out that it's not as scary as we first thought!

We have all enjoyed reading about the legend of Icarus and how he flew too close to the sun.  We have now finished making our own Icaruses (Icari?) and you can see them hanging around in the classroom!

3 days in a row!

Today we did gymnastics again.  It was even harder than before because we had to do back rolls and some people hurt themselves.  We have to remember to hold our arms properly and push at the right time.

For the 3rd day running, we have a new student!  Her name is Nicole and she is from China.  We hope she feels very welcome.

We started to make models of Icarus.  We really like the story.  It is a bit sad but some of us think it's funny when he falls into the sea.  You can see for yourself by clicking here.

Stuart and Gym

Today we started to do gymnastics with Stuart the gym instructor.  We practiced our forward rolls.  We did a bear roll, a box roll and a dish roll.  Some bits were hard, like the dish roll because we kept rolling off the mat.  The bear roll was hard for some of us because we couldn't lean back up again.

In writing today we learned how to write good instructions.  We found that you had to be exact and clear so that people would understand them and could follow them.  We had to write how to draw a stick-man.  It was harder than it sounds because you had to be really clear about where to draw everything and how big to draw it.

We also welcomed another new student, Jamie.  Jamie joins us from Korea and we hope that she settles in quickly and feels very happy to be part of Room 11.

Term 3 Begins

Assembly   Getting our countries for the Olympics   New student     Easy first day   fitness    wet play - watched a movie  Greek myth

Today was the first day of term 3.  We are now past half way through the year!  It was quite an easy day.  We did some writing about our holidays.  We read a Greek myth called Daedalus and Icarus.  Icarus didn't listen to his father and he flew too close to the sun and his wings fell to pieces.

This afternoon we found out what countries we would be learning about for the Olympics.  Room 11 will be learning about Tonga and Latvia.  We have already discovered that Latvia is close to Finland.  Finland is special because it is where our new student (and Santa Claus) comes from.  Her name is Iiris and we are going to make her feel very welcome.
